Sonya D. (Durkay) Gendall

     Mrs. Sonya D. (Durkay) Gendall, 77, a resident of Bear Creek Township, fell asleep in the Lord early Sunday morning in the care of the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township following a recent illness.

     Born August 31, 1941 in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter to the late Joseph and Mary Durkay.

     Educated locally, Mrs. Gendall was a member of the 1958 graduating class of the former Ashley High School where she participated as a cheerleader.

     Until her retirement, Sonya was employed as a payroll specialist with the Bell Telephone Company in Wilkes-Barre.

     She was a life member of the Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, North Wilkes-Barre, where she previously volunteered at various church functions including the annual parish bazaars and various social dinners held at the church.

     She and her husband, Mr. William D. Gendall recently celebrated fifty-five years of married life together on October 3rd.

     In addition to her parents, Sonya was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Rita Radzwilla.

     Left to mourn her passing in addition to her husband William at home are several generations of nieces and nephews including her caregiver, Mrs. Jackie Powell of Glen Lyon and an aunt, Mrs. Helen Meys of Saratoga Springs, NY.

     Sonya is remembered by those who knew and loved her as being a loving devoted wife and aunt who will be greatly missed by all.  She was a kind and generous person who lived life to the fullest.  She had many friends and was always there to comfort and aid those in need.  Her kindness and spirit will always remain in our hearts.

     Funeral services for Mrs. Gendall will be conducted on Thursday morning from the North Wilkes-Barre location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 625 North Main Street.  The Reverend Michael Kerestes, pastor of Saint Mary's will serve as celebrant.

     Interment will be private and at the convenience of her family.

     Relatives and friends may join Mr. Gendall and his family for visitation and remembrances Thursday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon at the funeral home.
