Bertha Delzeit Obituary

Mrs. Bertha M. (Kocik) Delzeit, 87, a life resident of Wilkes-Barre's North End neighborhood, passed into Eternal Life most unexpectedly Friday afternoon as an emergency patient in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born October 25, 1934 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the last surviving of nine children to the late Lawrence and Pauline (Shramko) Kocik.  Educated in the city schools, she was a member of the 1952 graduating class of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.

Devoted to her Catholic faith, she was a member of the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, North Wilkes-Barre.

Until her formal retirement, Mrs. Delzeit was employed in hospitality at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Plains Township for several years.  Her outgoing personality made her a favorite by patients and visitors alike; making many friends during her tenure.

She also cared for several infirmed neighbors over the years.

Fraternally, Mrs. Delzeit held membership in the ladies auxiliary of the North End Slovak Citizens Club, where she served as past president.

In her spare time, Bertha loved baking and cooking for her family, who were the focal point of her life.  She is remembered as being a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, whose presence will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mr. Paul T. Simonson; by her second husband, Mr. Frederick John Delzeit on November 11, 2003; her eight brothers and sisters and most recently by her son, Lawrence M. Simonson on November 27, 2015.

Left to cherish her memory are her children; Paul T. Simonson and his wife Janice of Mechanicsville, MD; Phillip R. Delzeit and his fiancé, Cindi Obitz of Parsons; Frederick J. Delzeit Jr. and his wife Elaine Drevenak Delzeit of Wilkes-Barre and Pamela A. Belcastro and her husband Frank "Tony" of Ashley; Daughter-in-law, Peggy Simonson of Lothian, Maryland; Thirteen grandchildren, including her caregiver, Bailee Belcastro; Eighteen great-grandchildren; Numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Delzeit will be conducted on Saturday January 29th with her Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, 668 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.  The Reverend Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist.  Due to inclement weather, the Rite of Committal will be conferred immediately following Mass in church.  Interment will be held privately in Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Cemetery of Saint Andre Bessette Parish, Dorchester Drive, Dallas.

Relatives and friends may join the Delzeit family for visitation and shared remembrances directly at church Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.

In lieu of floral tributes, Bertha's family would be humbled if those wishing to make a monetary donation in their mother's name, kindly give consideration to the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association at 57 North Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701 or to www.alz.org/pa .
