Mr. Carl W. Backlund, 96, a resident of the Rolling Mill Hill section of Wilkes-Barre, passed into eternal life unexpectedly Thursday morning while in the care of Allied Services Meade Street Residence, where he resided the past few months.
Born September 21, 1923 in Burlington, Colorado, he was the son of the late Alvin and Florence (Elmgren) Backlund. He was educated in the Colorado schools and later graduated from the University of Nebraska.
Until his retirement, he was employed as the chief archivist for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
In his spare time, he was an avid amateur photographer and belonged to a local photography club.
"Uncle Carl" as he was known to those who knew and loved him, is remembered as being a loving and devoted husband and father figure to his local relatives. His presence will be greatly missed.
Carl was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and most recently by his wife, the former Frances A. "Cookie" (Cecelon) Backlund on February 3, 2019. At the time of her passing, the couple shared thirty-nine years of married life together. During their time together, they enjoyed traveling the globe extensively, capturing countless photographic memories along the way.
Left to cherish his memory are sons; Eric Backlund and his wife Jae-Yu of Washington, D.C. and Leif Backlund of New Jersey; granddaughter, Alissa Backlund; Several loving nieces and nephews including his caregivers, Frank and Essie Harrison of South Wilkes-Barre.
Per his previous request, services for Carl will be private and at the convenience of his family with no formal visitation.
