Mr. Carl Joseph Check, 81, a resident of the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, passed into Eternal Life unexpectedly Wednesday, July 1st while in the comfort of his residence following a recent illness.
Born June 3, 1939 in Wilkes-Barre, he was the youngest of three sons to the late Michael John and Josephine (Strofky) Check. Educated in the city schools, he was a member of the 1957 graduating class of the James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.
Following his formal education, Mr. Check proudly served our country with the United States Army, being stationed in Germany for three years.
Until his retirement, Mr. Check served the City of Wilkes-Barre as a career firefighter for over twenty years retiring March 31, 1993 with the rank of Captain. Prior to that, he was employed by the Charmin paper products company in Mehoopany.
He and his wife, the former Carolyn "Carol" Urban would have celebrated fifty-two years of marriage next month. Sadly, the day Carl was called home by our Heavenly Father, his wife was stricken ill and will be unable to attend his services. We kindly ask you keep Mrs. Check in your prayers for our Lord's comforting and healing embrace in her absence.
The couple has membership in Our Lady of Hope Parish, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Professionally, Mr. Check also held membership in the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local #104 of Wilkes-Barre.
In his spare time, Carl enjoyed bowling, golfing and shooting darts as well as tinkering with electronics and traveling.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Check and his wife Georgine.
Left to cherish his memory in addition to his beloved wife Carolyn at home, is his brother, Michael Richard Check; Sister-in-law, Miss Mary A. Urban, both of Wilkes-Barre; several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Check will be conducted on Wednesday, July 15th at 10:30 a.m. from the North Wilkes-Barre location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 625 North Main Street followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Avenue with the Reverend J. Duane Gavitt, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Wilkes-Barre officiating. A contingency of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department will be present as honor guard.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery, PA Route #315, Bear Creek Township.
Relatives and friends may join his family members for visitation and shared remembrances Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
