It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Eugene R. "Gene" Walker Sr., 76; a former resident of the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, currently a resident of Wyoming. Mr. Walker passed into eternal life unexpectedly within a few hours of admission to the Allied Services Hospice Center of Wilkes-Barre, with his beloved family at his side.
Born on Sunday, September 18, 1949 in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son to the late Eugene and Bertha (Gorkiewicz) Walker. Educated in the city schools, he was a 1967 graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. Mr. Walker also furthered his education toward his career by taking courses at the Wilkes-Barre Area Vocational-Technical School.
Prior to his retirement, Eugene forged his career as an equipment manager with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, where he played a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of transportation in our region. His commitment to his work and his colleagues was matched only by his devotion to his family.
In his spare time and being a lover of the outdoors, Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also took pride in his many seasonal vegetable gardens and enjoyed canning his annual harvests for family and friends. Another of his favorite past-times was people watching on his street while he sat in the shade of his porch.
He had a selfless and caring demeanor, always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. Being skilled in home repairs and remodeling, he was thrilled to assist his grandson renovate his recent home purchase prior to becoming ill.
His best accomplishment was his family and sharing time with them. He was a loving devoted husband to his wife of fifty-four years, the former Philomena "Philly" (Gola) Walker; an amazing father to Stephanie Marek and her husband Christopher of Plains Township; Gene Walker and his companion Erika Santiago of Old Forge and Debbie Walker, also of Wyoming; and the Best PopPop to Darryn & Chase Marek; Kayden & Lucy Walker and Skye “Skyeroni” Gilroy. He will be incredibly missed by all those who knew and loved him in this life including his several nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Walker will be conducted on Saturday, November 22nd at 1:00 p.m. from the John V. Morris Family Funeral Home Inc., 625 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Reverend Michael J. Boris, Parochial Vicar of Saint Ignatius Parish, Kingston, will serve as celebrant for the Liturgy of the Word.
Interment will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
