Gertrude Alles Obituary

Mrs. Gertrude G. (Gibbons) Alles, 94, a resident of the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, passed peacefully into Eternal Life Wednesday morning while in the care of Allied Services Meade Street Skilled Nursing following a recent illness.

Born December 6, 1925 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the last of seven children to the late John and Anna (Connor) Gibbons.  Educated in the Catholic faith, she was a member of the 1943 graduating class of the former Saint Mary’s High School, and was a parishioner of Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, both of Wilkes-Barre.

In her youth, and following her formal education, Mrs. Alles took employment with the former Bell Telephone Company in Wilkes-Barre for several years.  She would later meet and eventually marry her beloved husband Robert.  Together the couple would raise four wonderful children and watch their families grow into adulthood.

Mr. Alles passed away on January 11, 2007.  At the time of his passing, the couple shared fifty-seven years of married life together.  Also preceding her were brothers and sisters; Mary, Robert, Catherine, Joseph, Sr. Mary Luke, R.S.M. and William Gibbons.

Left to cherish the wonderful memories they have of her are her children, Robert L. Alles and his wife Maureen of Clarks Summit; Raymond Alles and his wife Carla of Wilkes-Barre; Anne Scibilia of Kingston and Marian Newton and her husband David of O'Fallon, MO;  Ten grandchildren, Twelve Great-Grandchildren; Brother-in-law, Paul Alles, Swoyersville; Numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alles will be conducted on Saturday with her funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 226 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre.  The Reverend Joseph D. Verespy, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist.  Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in the parish cemetery, Pioneer Avenue, Shavertown.

Relatives and friends may join the Alles family directly at church Saturday morning for services.  Facial masks will be required, and funeral home staff will ensure spatial seating is followed to comply with social distancing requirements.  Calling hours will be held privately for her family.
