Helen Fealy Obituary

Mrs. Helen M. (Merenich) Fealy, 98, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, fell asleep in the Lord Tuesday January 10, 2023 in Mechanicsburg, where she recently resided.  Born on Tuesday, March 11, 1924 in Freeland, she was one of nine children to the late Wassil and Anna (Huskie) Merenich.

Helen was a remarkable woman who lived an uncelebrated life.  She had boundless energy and shared it with her family, church and friends.

Coming from a humble background, she enjoyed a happy childhood.  Following her education, she worked primarily in service jobs as a waitress, department clerk and seamstress.  During the Second World War, she worked at RCA Corporation where she soldered walkie-talkies for the military, where she received an untreated eye injury during her tenure.

Helen was quite resourceful, delighting in being able to fix things on her own. She will be   remembered as being frugal, but never stingy; often generous to a fault.  She always pulled her weight, whether it was assisting her parish making holiday nut rolls; assisting at rummage sales; parish picnics and Christmas parties or contributing to the expenses when vacationing with family.

Keeping physically active, she enjoyed walking.  Even at the age of 98, she would descend and climb back up six flights of stairs, (taking a break on the third floor) to maintain her fitness.  To help with her memory, she enjoyed keeping sharp with jigsaw and crossword puzzles, as well as playing Sudoku and word games on her Kindle.

She loved her friends and family although sometimes her ‘speak my mind’ MUTE button malfunctioned. All those who knew Helen and were on the receiving end of her kindness loved her too.

Helen is survived by her brother, Mr. George Merenich of Freeland, PA.

The Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy will be conducted on Wednesday January 18, 2023 at 10:00 AM in Saint John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 526 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Township.  The Reverend Mykhaylo Prodanets, pastor will serve as celebrant and homilist. Those wishing to attend services may join the family from 9:00 am until time of services for quiet reflection. Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Saint Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, School Street, Freeland, PA.

In lieu of floral arrangements, Helen’s family would be humbled if you would consider making a monetary donation in her memory to St. Johns Byzantine Catholic Church 522-534 Church Street, Wilkes-Barre Twp., PA 18702.
