Mrs. Helene M. Walkowiak (Mashunas), 74, Wilkes-Barre, fell asleep in the Lord Tuesday at Riverstreet Manor where she resided, following a tragic accident that she suffered nine years ago.
Born on December 12, 1948, in Pittston, Helene was the youngest of four children to the late Joseph and Helen (Azukus) Mashunas. Helene was educated in Pittston schools and she was a 1966 graduate of Northeast High School. After graduating she worked at Harlan Check Company, the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and most recently she worked as a Data Processor for the Social Security Administration.
Helene was a member of Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, North Wilkes-Barre. She enjoyed country music and especially loved traveling, by car, to California and back to spend time with her daughter Stephanie, son-in-law Mike, and their dog Denali. It is without a doubt that she will be remembered for her love of her family which includes her dogs, Sam, Lily, and Snowflake. Her physical presence will be greatly missed by all of those she touched in this life.
Mrs. Walkowiak was preceded in death by her parents along with sisters Rosalie Staffa and Mary Ann Grey, and also her brother Joseph Mashunas Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Donald at home, daughter Stephanie Hart and husband Michael of Costa Mesa, CA, a sister-in-law and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Walkowiak will be conducted on Saturday January 21, 2023. Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 695 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Reverend Michael Kerestes, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist. Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow at St. Casimir’s Cemetery in Pittston.
Relatives and friends may join the Walkowiak family for visitation and shared remembrances Saturday morning from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. directly at the church.
