John Hannagan Obituary

Mr. John David Hannagan, 67, a resident of Wilkes-Barre's North End neighborhood, passed into Eternal Life peacefully the evening of Friday, June 28th while in the care of Third Avenue Health and Rehabilitation, Kingston with beloved family at his bedside.

Born on Monday, July 9, 1956 in Queens Village; Long Island, New York, he was one of four children to the late John R. and Ann L. (Egan) Hannagan.  He began his education in the New York City school system prior to his family's relocation to Wilkes-Barre when he was seven years of age.

John continued his education locally by becoming a 1974 graduate of the former Elmer L. Meyers High School, South Wilkes-Barre.  He furthered his education by attending the Pennsylvania State University Wilkes-Barre campus and later graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from then Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre.

Prior to his formal retirement, John worked as a clerk for the Department of Health and Human Services Social Security Administration’s Data Operations Center in Wilkes-Barre for some thirty-five years.

In his spare time and enjoying the outdoors, he was an avid golfer.  One of his proudest achievements was attaining a hole-in-one at the Emanon Country Club in Falls.  He also enjoyed fishing and a good New York Times crossword puzzle.  He loved to travel extensively.  John was able to enjoy a good glass of beer in forty-nine of the fifty states within our Union.  He and Regina loved their many seasonal trips to Ocean City, Maryland over the years.  Above all else, John is best remembered by family and friends as being a kind gentleman to many.  His presence will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him in this life.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Jeffrey Bills and Tony S. Zapotoczny.

Left to cherish all the wonderful memories they keep of him are his loving companion of thirty-one years, Regina T. Zapotoczny, at home; Brother, Mark Hannagan and his wife Leonara of North Carolina; Sisters, Peggy Scott and her husband Danny of Bear Creek; Sue Bills of Boston, MA; Sisters-in-law; Anna Bozinski and her husband Dennis of North Wilkes-Barre; Mary Howson and her husband David Pohl of Ithaca, New York;  Nieces and Nephews including; Matt and his wife Autumn; Daniel, Ryan, Alison, Michael and his wife Emily; Annie and her husband Elliott; Audrey and her husband Rob; Joanna, Rachel and her husband Jon and Charlotte;  Great nieces and nephews; Loic, Ronan, Xena, Isis, his "buddy" Colt and Nina; along with several former co-workers and dear friends.
