Mr. Joseph P. "Doc" Doak, 69, a resident of Wilkes-Barre's Heights neighborhood, passed into Eternal Life Saturday evening while in the care of the Allied Hospice Center, Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre following a prolonged illness.
Born Christmastime, December 24, 1951 in Philadelphia, he was one of two children to the late Joseph and Helen Doak. Educated in the Philadelphia area schools, and proud of his Irish Catholic heritage, Joe was a graduate of the Cardinal Dougherty High School, in Philadelphia.
Until an accident caused his early retirement from professional duties, Joe was employed by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority or SEPTA as a bus driver and train operator for over twenty years.
In his spare time, Joe was an avid Philadelphia Eagles football fan and loved singing karaoke at Jim McCarthy's Tavern on the Hill in Wilkes-Barre over the years. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He and his wife, the former Deborah A. Elgonitis, celebrated twelve years of married life together on September 19th of this year.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death more recently by his sister, Patricia Doak.
Left to cherish the wonderful memories they keep of him in addition to his wife Debbie at home are sons Joseph Doak of Philadelphia; James Doak of Florida; Step-sons; Mark Elgonitis, Thomas Middaugh and Eric Elgonitis, all of Wilkes-Barre; Daughters Michelle Doak, Donna Victor and Cindy Latter, all of Philadelphia; Nieces and nephews including Richard Ashenbach, whom he loved like a son; Several grandchildren including his "buddies", Mark Elgonitis Jr. and Eric Elgonitis Jr.; and many dear friends.
Memorial funeral services for Joseph will be conducted on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. from the John V. Morris Funeral Home Inc., 625 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. Relatives and friends may join Deb and the family for visitation and shared remembrances from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services.
