Joseph Mamola Obituary

We are saddened to announce the unexpected passing of a loving father and friend to many. Mr. Joseph C. Mamola, a resident of Wilkes-Barre's Parsons neighborhood, passed into eternal life Thursday, June 11th in the comfort of his residence.

Born on Tuesday, May 21, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, he just celebrated his ninety-seventh birthday three weeks prior.

He was educated in the city schools, being a 1947 graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.

Following his formal education, Mr. Mamola enlisted with the United States Army and proudly served our country during the Korean War. He earned the rank of corporal upon his Honorable Discharge from military duties on February 25, 1953.

Mr. Mamola began his career with the ARA Vending Company of Wilkes-Barre, where he was employed for over twenty-five years before becoming the owner and operator of Vendor's First Choice on North Pennsylvania Avenue; a position he held for the next five years.

Devoted to his Roman Catholic faith, he held membership in Saints Peter and Paul Parish, Plains Township. Fraternally, he was a member of the North End Slovak Citizens' Club and the Brookside Post #132 of the American Legion.

In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling and visiting local flea markets with his wife.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the former Josephine C. (Coley) Mamola on January 20, 2020. At the time of Mrs. Mamola's passing, the couple shared sixty-seven years of married life together. Sadly, the couple bid farewell to a son, Mr. Joseph A. "Hozay" Mamola on March 10, 2011. He was also preceded by brothers Raymond, John "Jack" and most recently Francis Mamola.

Left to cherish all the memories they now keep of him are his daughter Joanne M. Koval and her husband Donald of North Wilkes-Barre; Son Mark M. Mamola and his wife Kathleen of Sweet Valley; Grandchildren, including Christopher Koval and wife Sara; Jennifer Panzino; Elizabeth Koval; Melissa Miele and husband Jason; Sarah Comparetta and husband Rob; Mark Mamola Jr. and wife Debbie; Seventeen great-grandchildren; One great-great granddaughter; Sister, Mrs. Ursula Kozemko of Kingston; Several generations of nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Mamola will be conducted on Monday with his funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saints Peter and Paul Parish, 13 Hudson Road, Plains Township. Those attending are asked to assemble directly at church by 9:45 a.m. The Reverend John C. Lambert, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist. Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow next to his wife in Sacred Heart of Jesus R.C. Cemetery, Dorchester Drive, Dallas where military honors will be accorded by members of the United States Army.
