Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA to the late Anna Kavka Giddo and John Giddo, Madeline now rests in peace with the Lord.
Mal, as she was affectionately known, is survived by her sister Rita Giddo Acker. She was predeceased by her husband K. Frederick Okano and by her siblings Cyril, John, and Florence Giddo and Josephine Giddo Carbone.
After graduating from Coughlin High School, Mal took a bus to Washington, D.C. to begin her decades-long career with the Federal Government in the Department of Agriculture. Always glamorous, free spirited, and independent, Mal thoroughly enjoyed life in the city and especially loved going out dancing. Sadly, a brain aneurysm brought her career to an end in her early 50s; but with tremendous hard work, Mal fought to regain her independence, eventually moving back to Washington and getting married to her beloved Fred.
A Divine Liturgy will be held Tuesday, January 17 at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Wilkes-Barre at 10 a.m. with visitation at 9:30 until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the K. Frederick and Madeline G. Okano Scholarship Fund at The George Washington University at: go.gwu.edu/okanoscholarship
