Mary Slavick Obituary

Mrs. Mary Catherine (Butler) Slavick, 100, a resident of City Heights Apartments, Wilkes-Barre, passed into Eternal Life unexpectedly Sunday morning at her residence.

Born on Friday, January 13, 1922 in Jenner Township, Somerset County, she would have celebrated her 101st birthday next month.  She was one of nine children to the late Harry and Daisy (Good) Butler.

She was a high school graduate of the Somerset County schools.

Mrs. Slavick was employed as a housekeeper both in western Pennsylvania as well as in the Wyoming Valley following the family's relocation to Wilkes-Barre.

A faithful member of Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Wilkes-Barre, Mrs. Slavick previously was active in organizing raffle sales, along with her daughter, at several shopping centers for the congregation's annual picnic in Nuangola.  Her friendly nature and persuasive personality garnered her top seller for several years.

She continued her organizational and leadership skills even after moving into City Heights Apartments.  At City Heights, she was elected the first "Tenant of the Month" and later that that same year in the 1980s, was elected the first "Tenant of the Year".  Mrs. Slavick served several terms as president of the tenants' association, and later as vice president.  She and her daughter remained quite active there over the years, coordinating many of the social activities and day trips for the residents of the high rise.  She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. Emil J. Slavick Sr. in 1984; by all five of her daughters, including Virginia M. Slavick; Marion Washicosky; Judith Shaffer; Linda Hay and Janet Oakley.  Also preceding her were seven brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish the memories they keep of her are her son, Emil J. Slavick Jr. and his wife Barbara of Wilkes-Barre; Thirteen grandchildren; Numerous great and great-great grandchildren; Sister, Mrs. Daisy Miller and her husband Virgil of Worcester, MA; Numerous nieces, nephews, fellow residents and dear friends.

Memorial funeral services for Mrs. Slavick will be conducted on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 667 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.  The Reverend Peter J. Haenftling, pastor, will serve as celebrant and leader of worship.

Interment will be held privately and at the convenience of the Slavick Family in western Pennsylvania.

Relatives and friends may join the family directly at church Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services for visitation and shared remembrances.
