Obituary

Mrs. Ruth Gertrude (Walter) May, 86, most lovingly remembered by all those she knew in this life simply as "Aunt Ruthie", passed into eternal life Wednesday evening, December 21st, 2022 in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following a recent illness.

Born on Monday, April 20th, 1936 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the last of seven children to the late Frank "Sam" and Gertrude (Krieg) Walter.  Educated in the Catholic faith, she was a member of the 1954 graduating class of the former Saint Nicholas High School, Wilkes-Barre.

Following her formal education, Aunt Ruthie took employment in the valley's garment industry as a seamstress for the Coal Street Dress Factory and Bravo Sewing Factory; a position she held for many years prior to her retirement.

In her spare time, and truly enjoying the company of family (and friends she considered family); Aunt Ruthie loved her visits to Jim McCarthy's Tavern on the Hill in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, where she became one of the longest-standing lady members of the seasonal dart leagues.

Fraternally, she was a member of the ladies auxiliary of both the Ashley Post and Lani Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Proud of her German Catholic heritage, Aunt Ruthie was a life member of the Church of Saint Nicholas in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Herman May.  She was also preceded by sisters, Claire Krafjack; Irene "Aunt Dolly" Baranousky and Helen M. Schneider; by brothers, Francis, John and Fred Walter.

Aunt Ruthie leaves a void in the lives of all those she touched in this life, especially her many nieces and nephews including her caregivers Ron and Aimee Schneider of Plains Township; Several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; fellow residents of Washington Square Apartments and countless friends including Mary Ruth Williams.

Funeral services for Mrs. May will be conducted on Thursday, December 29th with her funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of Saint Nicholas, 226 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre.

Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in the parish cemetery, Pioneer Avenue, Shavertown.

Relatives and friends may join Aunt Ruthie's family for visitation and shared remembrances Thursday morning directly at church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services.

The John V. Morris Family Funeral Home Inc. of Wilkes-Barre is honored to care for Aunt Ruthie and her family at this time.
