Mr. William P. Hawk, 77, best known by family and friends simply as "Chick", passed into Eternal Life just after midnight, Friday December 13th in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following a recent illness.
Born on Sunday, July 6, 1947 in Wilkes-Barre, he was the only son to the late William P. and Marion (Richards) Hawk.
Educated in the city schools, Chick was a graduate of the former James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1965.
Until his recent retirement in 2021, he was the owner and operator of Chick's Café on North Main Street in Wilkes-Barre; a position he held for some forty-five years. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his countless patrons as well as his "regulars" since purchasing the business in 1976. Being a favorite time of year for Chick, he thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the holidays with his patrons for annual “Merry Chickmas” at his café.
In his spare time when he wasn’t visiting with his customers, Chick could be seen trying his luck at area casinos. Enjoying sports, he was also an avid fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cleveland Browns.
He and his wife, the former Carol A. Charnichko, celebrated fifty-seven years of married life together on August 26th.
Left to cherish all the wonderful memoires they keep of him in addition to his wife Carol, at home are his girls; Kimberly Hawk and her husband Greivin Araya of Mountain Top; Lisa Hawk of Wilkes-Barre and Jennifer Weiss and her husband Joseph, also of Mountain Top; his adoring grandchildren, Jaden and Jolie Weiss and Sean Hawk; Several brothers and sisters-in-law; Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He is best remembered as being stubborn on the outside, but a kind-hearted soul on the inside; who valued strength, independence and a strong sense of principle. He was one of a kind and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services with Panachida will be conducted Tuesday evening at 4:30 p.m. from the John V. Morris Family Funeral Home Inc., 625 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Very Reverend Michael Kerestes, pastor of Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church will serve as celebrant and homilist.
Interment will be held privately and at the convenience of the Hawk family.
Relatives and friends may join the family for visitation and shared remembrances Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of floral tributes, memorial donations would be appreciated in Chick's memory to the American Heart Association, 4250 Crum Mills Road, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17112 or online at www.heart.org.
